Secretary’s Report (PW)
Thanks to all for attending, a good turn out from the active members.
The entry for the Open HC was disappointing with only 9 riders (from an entry of 16) actually competing. This seems to be the norm for hill climbs and the club made a small loss on the event. After some discussion, it was agreed to continue with for 2012 to maintain the availability of such events.
The Inter-Club event was the closest yet this year, with North Lancs taking the win on their own ground. Thanks to those who rode and marshalled.
A good turn out at the Deerplay event on a bad night for racing, and doing anything else outdoors!
Cross racing is growing in popularity and the RRC is no exception, with several members making their debut. It is likely that this will continue to grow in the future years.
Thanks to the coaches on the Saturday morning sessions. This is a big effort from those taking part but is beginning to show progress with a number of young riders becoming more committed.
Treasurer’s Report (RF)
The accounts are in a reasonable situation with a profit on the years’ activities. There was loss on the sale of CTT handbooks and it was agreed that members should arrange their own handbook direct from the CTT website for 2012.
The CCT levy for club events in 2012 will rise to £2 (from £1 as existing). Although it is recognised that the club may suffer a loss, it was agreed to raise the entry fee for 2012 club events to £2, just covering the levy. A further decision can be made in 12 months time for 2013. Proposed AW, seconded HL
There are presently 35 paid up members of the club. Subscriptions for 2012 are now due - £15 to RF.
Chairman’s Report (AW)
Thanks to Julian for arranging the ‘do’ at the Sykeside.
A good year for the club in the L&L Spoco series – overall team champions for the first time, with 14 different riders representing the club.
A big thanks to those who marshalled at the evening 10s. There has been a healthy number of competitors throughout the year, with several newcomers, and marshals are always required.
Election of Officials
Chairman Adrian Watts Proposed HL, seconded JM
Secretary Paul Warrener Proposed PH, seconded JM
Press/race secretary Derek Schofield Proposed MT, seconded PW
Recorder Adrian Watts Proposed HL, seconded RF
Treasurer Roy Flanagan Proposed AW, seconded DL
Social Secretary Julian Monk Proposed HL, seconded AW
Clubman of the Year
A confidential vote was taken for the Clubman of the Year which will be announced at the annual prize giving dinner.
Any Other Business
There was some discussion on the quality of the club kit received from Rush. Apart from some issues with zips and seams, which had on the whole been resolved, the kit appeared reasonable quality and price. It was agreed that DS would obtain samples and prices from 2 alternative suppliers for the next meeting.
AW proposed there would be 16 evening club events in 2012. The best 9 events will count towards the championship, but must include 2 marshal nights which will earn 10 points each. HL has decided to step down form being principal timekeeper but would continue as a marshal. There was a big thanks from all to Harry for all the ‘time’ (‘scuse the pun!) he had put into the club over the years. Timekeepers for 2012 would be from DS, KG, RW and AW.
A note that all club events must be notified to David Collinge by latest 31 December 2011.
Le Grimm Pierre was enjoyed (is that the right word?) by six riders in September. It was proposed to repeat the ride early in 2012, with an open sportive at a later date. It is pssible that Gearns School may be suitable venue for a full sportive. DS is to investigate possible dates and venues.
The annual ‘do’ is now booked at the Sykeside on Saturday 28 January 2012. Suggestions for guest speaker are required.
DS noted that he has volunteered himself to be organiser for the Cockermouth ‘25’ on the early May Bank Holiday Sunday morning. This is tied in with the Nelson Wheelers camping weekend. DS requested helpers for marshalling etc.
The Malcolm Eccles inter-club shield has been recovered, from Mark Bateman.
A regular programme of Saturday/Sunday rides was proposed but no volunteers forthcoming to take on the mantle of organiser. No big effort is required – just someone to get things moving, and any ideas/offers would be welcome. The club web site or e-mail address list would be a good medium and is available to anyone who offers.
The club’s Xmas social evening is to be on Monday 19 December at the White Lion, Burnley Road, Rawtenstall from 7.30pm onwards. Volunteers required to lead Harry home!
Meeting closed 9.30 pm
Thanks to all for attending and supporting the club
NEWSLETTER, OCTOBER 2011
I seem to have missed September, my apologies, and time’s moved on to October. But it seems like August again! No excuse for not being out on your bike with weather like this.
Now - my second round of apologies. Anyone who was at last Monday’s meeting may have missed the results of the club 25 mile handicap which was also mistakenly reported in the Free Press. The result should be:
Handicap:
- Andy Russell 1:01:33
- Andy Ibberson 1:02:12
- Mike O’Shea 1:02:39
Actual time:
- Paul Warrener 59:56
- Derek Schofield 1:01:22
- Damian Ludlow 1:03:52
Click here for the full results.
Other news from Monday’s meeting:
- The AGM will be held at the Cellar Room, Watt’s News, on Monday 31 October, 8 pm. If you have anything you want to raise at the meeting, please let Paul or myself know beforehand if you can. Please come along if you can, the more the merrier, and your views and comments would be greatly appreciated.
- We desperately need someone who may be interested in running Sunday (or Saturday) rides throughout the winter.
- We’ve applied to run the Cockermouth 25 mile TT on the early May Bank Holiday Sunday for 2012, with myself as the nominated organiser. This event is run in conjunction with the Nelson Wheelers camping weekend. It’s a great weekend with the chance to ride 3 events – a 10 on Saturday, the 25 on Sunday and the Shap hill climb on Monday. Even if you don’t race or want to take part in one or two events, you would be very welcome. There’s normally a communal BBQ on at least one night with plenty of time to take in the North Western part of the Lakes. Your help with the Sunday’s event would be especially welcomed.
Thanks to those who turned out for Le Grim Pierre. Just 3 of us made the full route but we met up again with the others at Clarion House (the Trawden Clarion!) who were getting a bit chill after a long wait. We stopped at the cabin at Barley car park for a bit of dinner and, personally, I can thoroughly recommend the café. The scones being baked smelt wonderful but I just couldn’t manage one after a huge beans on toast (very unlike me!).
I don’t know why, but someone suggested we also do this route as a training ride early season as well as this end of season bash. Sounds masochistic – sorry, a good idea, - so we can pick a date at the AGM and I’ll attempt to get more riders to take part. We’ve also talked about making this into a full sportive for 2012, with a shorter option available, and this sounds fine as well.
I’ve been asked by several people about track pumps and adaptors to use with discs. I bought an adaptor from Graham Strugnall who advertises on the CTT web site. They’re made in the UK and are pretty substantial, quite expensive at £25, but if they fit your wheel may save you a lifetime of faffing about. If anyone’s interested I can pass on the contact details or they can try the one I’ve got. The first one I got off Graham started to leak after about a month and he replaced it promptly. However, he also told me a little silicon grease around the locking lever does the trick.
Crown Point hill climb results should be on the web site soonest. Well done to John Hartley and Ben Treanor, 1 st and 2 nd club riders.
That’s all for now – any comments, ideas, or items for the Free Press column, please let me know.
PS. There are some new items appeared on the club’s website For Sale section, so have a look – you never know what you might see.
NEWSLETTER, AUGUST 11
- The Eccles Trophy challenge v North Lancs RC. Tuesday and Wednesday this week, 9 th & 10 th August with trophy and a pint after the event on Wednesday in the Edisford Bridge hotel – all welcome!
- A date for Le Grim Pierre – Sunday 11 th September. This is our own club sportive. Not too long (c70 miles) but taking in all the prominent hill climbs in the West Pennines. More details to follow but put this date in your diary.
That’s about it for now - the next club meeting is provisionally Monday 29 August at 8pm, Watts News, Burnley Road East, Waterfoot, but may change due to the Bank Holiday – I’ll confirm later.
Regards
Derek
